MANILA, Philippines -- As part of National Language Month (Buwan ng Wika) celebrations the Department of Education (DepEd) will hold the fourth National Competition on Filipino Language, Literature, Creative Writing and Extemporaneous Speech.

The contest will be held FROM August 27 to 31 at the DepEd Region 4 office in Batangas.

The contest aims to test the knowledge of students in Filipino writing and public speaking.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said in a statement that the contest, as well as subsequent events during Language Month in August, aims to encourage students to learn more about their country’s language and culture.

This year’s theme is “Maraming Wika, Matatag na Bansa” (A strong country of many languages), which aims to promote the qualities of multi-ethnicity.

DepEd has split the celebrations on a weekly basis covering various aspects of local languages.
